Seasons of Change
The more things change the more they stay the same. Sometimes it feels like this old saying is true. That life is a merry go round and we are all like horses stuck on a platform going up and down and round and round. I have noticed this recently as one season flows into the next and I find myself going through the same rituals, the same routines. Now it's back to school season, next will be holiday season. There will be new shoes to buy, babies born, birthdays, weddings, funerals and after awhile it can all seem the same. The doldrums of life can set in.
But if I change my attitude I can change my life. I can notice the dimple in a newborn's smile. I can relax on a sunshiny day. I can sit at a baseball game and celebrate the boys of summer who play games for fun and for the win.
Yes, life is like a merry go round but I can be happy to be on this ride. I can take comfort in knowing spring follows winter. Bulbs will bloom despite my depression or anxiety. I can take comfort in knowing the routines and rituals of life will go on whether I am an active participant or not. Kids will go back to school. Christmas music will start playing on the radio after Thanksgiving. Farmers will harvest their vegetables and the heartbeat of life will keep beating.
I can look at life from a different angle and I can be happy that here in New England everything old is new again with our seasons of change. But when I start feeling hopeless, stuck and depressed, I know the clinicians at Psychotherapy Services of RI can help. They can remind me that the possibility of change is always here.
